The year 2011, will go down in history as one of the most turbulent of this century. There was a Middle East revolution, which started in Tunisia and spread to Egypt, Libya, and Syria, resulting in the removal of three of the most dreaded dictators who ruled their people with brute force.

In addition, we have had a wall street protest against corporate greed; which started in New York city, but it soon spread to London Trafalgar Square England, Toronto, Vancouver, and other cities across the US.

We have seen a Euro Zone financial crisis; which threatened the entire world economy. As a result, political leaders were forced to fly back and forth across the skies in a panic to negotiate a bailout deal to save Greece from bankruptcy; while Greece citizens clashed with police in the streets.

Finally, after several meetings, the Euro Zone leaders agreed on a bailout package for Greece, and the world was able to breathe a sigh of relief. But, when the Euro Zone leaders were getting ready to celebrate the bailout package, Prime Minister George Papandreou did the unthinkable.

The Prime Minister decided to call for a referendum to give the people of Greece the opportunity to decide whether they wanted the bailout package. The Prime Minister was worried that in spite of the billions of pounds he got to pay down the country’s debt, the citizens of Greece would still have to make a lot of sacrifices; which he wanted them to reflect on, and give their approval in a referendum. In spite of the fact that Mr. Papandreou had the legal and political power to accept the deal.

When Mr. Papandreou said that he would call a referendum, the other Euro Zone leaders got angry because they had spent a lot of time travelling back and forth to negotiate the bailout package. As a result, the French president, and the German chancellor met to motivate Mr. Papandreou to accept the package exactly the way it was negotiated to save the Euro Zone.

But, Mr. Papandreou was determined to call a referendum. In his address to his parliament, Mr. Papandreou said that the debt crisis was the result of bad decisions made by previous Governments, and the people of Greece will have to accept cuts in civil service jobs, cuts in pensions and other areas in order to reduce the debt and interest rates, so the people should get the democratic right to express their views on the bailout deal.

The Prime Minister said that he believes in cooperation, ethical principles, and that the participation of the people is important. He said

the he did not get into politics for a career, so he did not care if he

was forced to step down; or if he was not re-elected. “Illegalities will

take a country to force and conflict.” Mr. Papandreou called for

transparency, justice, freedom, and the just distribution of wealth to the

Greek people.

In his final address to the country, the Prime Minister said “democracy is

our pride” and that he wants Greece to stay in the Euro-zone. But he wants

to relieve the burden of the debt from the Greek people by reducing the

debt, and reducing the interest rate.

The Prime Minister said that “power is to show values for common good,”

and to show strength is weakness. He stressed his interest in cooperation

and national unity and the need to escape from “narrow politics.”

He said he wanted to go back to the “roots of democracy.” A few days later, Mr. Papandreou met with the President of Greece to work out a new coalition Government. He agreed to resign when he met with the President; which he did with dignity, ethics, and respect for the country.

There was no need for a coalition of countries to join their military forces to take out Greece’s air defence system; or for NATO to fire a single bullet or lose a single life to get Mr. George Papandreou from office.

The Prime Minister said let the people decide. He said “morality transforms consciousness,” Mr. George Panpandrou is Winston Charles Arbitration Magazine’s political leader of the year.

Prime Minister Mr. George Papandreou demonstrated excellence in political ethics, justice and accountability in the manner in which he handled the challenges of the Greek financial crisis and the bailout package.
